Opera Singing Helps Long-Haul Covid-19 Patients Recover
What is ENO Breathe?
ENO Breathe is a virtual program that helps people recover from long-haul Covid-19 symptoms using the techniques of opera singing. Developed in partnership with the English National Opera (ENO) and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the program teaches participants breathing exercises and vocal techniques to improve their breathing and reduce their anxiety.
How Does ENO Breathe Work?
ENO Breathe sessions are conducted via Zoom and last for one hour each. Participants learn a variety of breathing exercises, including diaphragmatic breathing and singing lullabies. These exercises help to strengthen the diaphragm, improve lung capacity, and reduce hyperventilation.
Benefits of ENO Breathe
According to data provided by ENO Breathe, 90% of participants in the pilot program reported positive improvement in their breathlessness, while 91% felt that their levels of anxiety had dropped. Additionally, 100% of participants said they would continue practicing the techniques after the program ended.
Who Can Benefit from ENO Breathe?
ENO Breathe is designed for people who are experiencing long-haul Covid-19 symptoms, such as breathlessness, fatigue, and anxiety. Participants do not need to have any prior experience with singing or music.
What to Expect in an ENO Breathe Session
ENO Breathe sessions are led by a team of doctors, therapists, and vocal coaches. The sessions are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all participants.
- Breathing Exercises: Participants learn a variety of breathing exercises to improve their lung capacity and reduce hyperventilation.
- Vocal Techniques: Participants learn vocal techniques that are used by opera singers to improve their breathing and resonance.
- Singing Lullabies: Singing lullabies is a relaxing and soothing activity that can help to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of well-being.
- Community Support: ENO Breathe provides a supportive community for people who are recovering from long-haul Covid-19. Participants can share their experiences and support each other in their recovery journey.
How to Join ENO Breathe
ENO Breathe is available to people in England who are experiencing long-haul Covid-19 symptoms. To join the program, visit the ENO Breathe website or contact your local post-Covid clinic.
The Science Behind ENO Breathe
The breathing exercises and vocal techniques used in ENO Breathe are based on the science of respiratory physiology. Diaphragmatic breathing helps to strengthen the diaphragm, which is the main muscle responsible for breathing. Singing lullabies helps to slow down the breath and promote relaxation.
Personal Story: Sheeba’s Experience with ENO Breathe
Sheeba is a 43-year-old mother of two who experienced long-haul Covid-19 symptoms for over a year. She joined ENO Breathe in June and has since noticed a significant improvement in her symptoms.
“Before the program, I didn’t have many people to talk to about my experience,” Sheeba said. “But through ENO Breathe, I met others who were in a similar situation. Everyone had a similar experience to mine and we’re all at the same stage in our lives. Through singing, I feel rejuvenated.”
ENO Breathe Expands to Reach More Patients
Due to its success, ENO Breathe is expanding to reach more patients across England. By this fall, the program will reach 1,000 patients from more than 30 post-Covid clinics.
