Evcil Hayvanların Kökeni
Köpekler: İnsanın En İyi Arkadaşı
Gri kurtlardan türeyen köpekler, binlerce yıldır sadık dostlarımız olmuştur. Bilinen en eski köpek fosilleri 31.000 yıl öncesine dayanmaktadır, ancak genetik kanıtlar modern köpeklerin Orta Doğu’da ortaya çıktığını göstermektedir. Afgan tazısı ve Shar Pei gibi eski köpek ırkları binlerce yıldır ortalıktayken, çoğu modern ırk Viktorya döneminde ortaya çıkmıştır.

Koyunlar, keçilerle birlikte evcilleştirilen ilk hayvanlar arasındaydı ve kökenleri 11.000 yıl öncesine dayanmaktadır. Başlangıçta et için yetiştirildiler, daha sonra yünleri için değerli hale geldiler. Arkeolojik ve genetik kanıtlar, Verimli Hilal’i onların doğum yeri olarak işaret etmektedir, ancak çoklu genetik soylar, evcilleştirmenin farklı yabani koyun atalarından birkaç kez gerçekleştiğini düşündürmektedir.
İnekler: Besin Kaynağı
Evcil sığırlar iki ana çeşitte gelir: Taurin ve Zebular. Daha soğuk iklimlerde bulunan Taurin sığırları, Verimli Hilal’de ortaya çıkmıştır. Domuzlar, çeşitli bölgelerde defalarca evcilleştirilmiştir. En eski kanıtlar, 12.000 yıl önce yaban domuzlarının getirildiği Kıbrıs’tan gelmektedir. Tamamen evcilleştirilmiş domuzlar, 9.000 yıl önce Verimli Hilal’de ortaya çıkmıştır. Genetik kanıtlar, Doğu Asya, Güneydoğu Asya, Hindistan ve Avrupa’da ayrı evcilleştirme olaylarını göstermektedir.
Atlar: Bozkırlardan Eyerlere
Atlar ilk olarak Batı Avrasya Bozkırları’nda evcilleştirildi. Kazakistan’dan MÖ 3.500’e tarihlenen fosil kanıtlar, koşum ve kısrak sütü tüketimine dair kanıtlar göstermektedir. Çanak çömlek kalıntılarının kimyasal analizi, Botay kültürünün atlara olan bağımlılığını doğrulamaktadır.
Eşekler: Ticaretin ve Ulaşımın Yardımcıları
Eşeklerin, yaklaşık 5.000 yıl önce Kuzeydoğu Afrika’da gerçekleşen iki ayrı evcilleştirme olayını gösteren iki farklı genetik grubu vardır. DNA analizi, Nubian yaban eşeğini bir grubun atası olarak tanımlamıştır, ancak diğer grubun kökeni bilinmemektedir.

Eşsiz Bir Kabuklunun Keşfi
Maineli bir ıstakoz avcısı, canlı mavi benekli bir kabuğa sahip nadir bir ıstakoz çıkardığında olağanüstü bir keşifte bulundu. Tipik siyah-kahverengi ıstakozlardan farklı olarak, bu kabuklu deniz canlısı pamuk şekerinin rengini andırıyordu. Istakoz avcısı Bill Coppersmith, dişi ıstakoza torununun adını vererek Haddie adını verdi.
Olağanüstü Renklenme
Haddie’nin alışılmadık renklenmesi, kalıtsal bir genetik mutasyona veya beslenme düzenine bağlanıyor. Istakozlar tipik olarak koyu kahverengi tonlarını oluşturmak için birleşen üç veya dört pigmente sahiptir. Ancak Haddie, pamuk şekeri rengindeki tonuna neden olan mavi hariç tüm pigmentlerden yoksun görünüyor.
