Famous Churchill Portrait Stolen and Replaced with Fake
The Theft
An original print of the iconic “Roaring Lion” photograph of Winston Churchill was stolen from the Fairmont Château Laurier hotel in Ottawa, Canada, eight months ago. The theft was discovered when an employee noticed that the frame containing the print did not match the others on the wall.
The Photograph
The “Roaring Lion” is one of the most widely reproduced images of Winston Churchill. It was taken in 1941 by Armenian-Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. Karsh captured the image after persuading Churchill to remove his cigar, resulting in a fierce expression that has become synonymous with the former British prime minister.
The Investigation
Hotel officials contacted Jerry Fielder, director of Karsh’s estate, who confirmed that the signature on the stolen print was a fake. The hotel is asking the public for any images of the photograph taken between December 25, 2021 and January 6, 2022, to help narrow down the date of the theft.
The Value
The stolen print is a valuable piece of art. In 2020, another signed copy of a “Roaring Lion” original print sold for $62,500 at a Sotheby’s auction.
The Hotel’s Connection to Karsh
The Fairmont Château Laurier was more than just a hotel to Yousuf Karsh. He held his first exhibition there in 1936, opened his photography studio there in 1972, and moved into the hotel with his wife in 1980. Karsh gifted the hotel a number of signed original prints, including the Churchill portrait.
The Impact of the Theft
The theft of the “Roaring Lion” print is a significant loss for the Fairmont Château Laurier and for the city of Ottawa. The photograph is an iconic symbol of the hotel and of Winston Churchill himself.
Efforts to Recover the Photograph
Ottawa police are investigating the theft. Hotel manager Genevieve Dumas hopes that the stolen print will be recovered and returned to its rightful place at the Fairmont Château Laurier.
The Legacy of Yousuf Karsh
Yousuf Karsh was one of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. He was known for his portraits of famous figures, including Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, and Muhammad Ali. Karsh’s photographs are renowned for their artistry and their ability to capture the essence of his subjects.
The Significance of the “Roaring Lion”
The “Roaring Lion” photograph has become an enduring symbol of Winston Churchill and his leadership during World War II. The photograph has been reproduced on stamps, coins, and banknotes around the world. It is a powerful reminder of Churchill’s determination and resilience in the face of adversity.
