Archaeological Discoveries Unearth History of Ancient Pub in Slovakia
Discovery of Roman Coin and Remnants of 18th-Century Pub
Archaeologists working in the Slovakian town of Spišské Vlachy have made some exciting discoveries that shed light on the town’s history. During renovations of the Old Town Hall, which is an extension of the Assumption of Mary Church, they uncovered evidence of a 1,600-year-old settlement and an 18th-century pub.
Evidence of Ancient Settlement
The oldest object found on-site was a rare Roman coin depicting Constantius II, who ruled between 337 and 361 A.D. The coin’s presence suggests that people have lived in Spišské Vlachy since the time of the Great Migration, which took place amid the Roman Empire’s decline.
Artifacts from the 18th-Century Pub
In addition to the Roman coin, the team also uncovered evidence of a pub or inn likely used in the 18th century. Finds included parts of wooden floors, ceramic fragments, and a cellar where beer and wine were stored. The archaeologists also discovered coins minted in Poland and Hungary, which may have been used by travelers to book rooms or purchase meals.
Wall Graffiti and Other Clues
The archaeologists also discovered wall graffiti, some of which depicts gallows and a sword. These images provide clues to the activities that may have taken place in the pub. Additionally, the team identified what may be an old oven or furnace used to heat the building.
Historical Significance
The discovery of the pub and other artifacts provides valuable insights into the history of Spišské Vlachy. It suggests that the town was a hub of trade and travel in the past. The Roman coin indicates that the Slavic people who settled in the region actively traded with Rome. The coins minted in Poland and Hungary further support this notion of trade and交流.
Future Plans
Researchers from the Museum of Spiš Territory conducted the excavations, which began last October and concluded in March. The town’s mayor hopes to soon display the artifacts in a nearby museum, where they can be further studied and appreciated by the public.
Additional Discoveries
In addition to the pub, the archaeologists also discovered evidence of a wooden walkway, which may have been used to access the church. They also found a fragment of a ceramic stove, which was likely used for heating. These discoveries provide a more complete picture of life in Spišské Vlachy in the past.
Significance for Spišské Vlachy
The archaeological discoveries have generated excitement in Spišské Vlachy. They not only shed light on the town’s history but also have the potential to boost tourism and cultural heritage in the region. The town plans to incorporate the findings into its historical narrative and promote the site as a destination for visitors interested in archaeology and history.
