Czech Beer: Beyond Pilsner
The Czech Republic: A Beer Lover’s Paradise
The Czech Republic boasts a rich beer-making tradition, and its citizens are among the most enthusiastic beer drinkers in the world. Czechs consume an average of 80 gallons of beer per year, and pubs are a central part of Czech social life.
Pilsner: The Famous Czech Lager
The Czechs invented the Pilsner-style lager in the city of Plzeň in the 19th century. Pilsner Urquell, the original Pilsner beer, is still widely enjoyed today and can be found on tap in many Czech pubs.
Other Notable Czech Beers
While Pilsner is the most famous Czech beer, there are many other excellent brews to be discovered. Some popular brands include Krušovice, Gambrinus, Staropramen, and Kozel. Budvar, from the town of Budějovice, is another well-known Czech beer that has been embroiled in a long-standing legal battle with Anheuser-Busch over the “Budweiser” brand name.
Ordering Beer in Czech Republic
When ordering beer in Czech Republic, you will typically be asked if you want “točené” (draft) or “sudové pivo” (keg beer). A “pivo” is a large beer (0.5 liter), while a “malé pivo” is a small beer (0.3 liter). Men typically order the large size.
Czech Beer Culture
In Czech Republic, beer is more than just a drink; it is a way of life. Czechs do not mix beer with anything else, and they typically stay loyal to one brand of beer throughout the evening. The phrase “Na zdraví” means “to your health” in Czech and is the traditional toast when drinking beer.
Types of Czech Beer
Czech beers are typically classified by their “degrees,” which is a measurement of the density of certain ingredients. A rough guide to alcohol content is as follows:
- 10 degrees: about 3.5% alcohol
- 12 degrees: about 4.2% alcohol
- 11 and 15 degrees: dark beers
