Wood Bison: Returning to the Alaskan Wilderness

Reintroduction of a Lost Icon

Once thought to be extinct, the majestic wood bison is making a triumphant return to the Alaskan wilderness. These massive mammals, a subspecies of the American bison, were once a common sight in the boreal forests of Alaska and northwestern Canada. However, overhunting, habitat loss, and interbreeding with plains bison nearly wiped them out.

A Successful Recovery Program

Thanks to a successful population recovery program in Canada, wood bison have rebounded in recent years. Biologists have brought healthy stock from Canada to the United States and established a breeding program at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center near Anchorage.

The Journey to Alaska

Now, 100 genetically diverse wood bison are embarking on a journey to their new home in Alaska. They will travel by cargo plane in specially designed steel shipping containers to restrict their movement. The final leg of their journey will be a five-mile trek across the frozen Innoko River, led by biologist Tom Seaton and his crew.

Ecological Benefits

The return of wood bison to Alaska is expected to have a positive impact on the ecosystem. Their grazing will break up coarse grasses, creating more open habitat for birds and small mammals. This increased biodiversity will enhance the overall health of the ecosystem.

Subsistence Hunting

Once the herd grows in size, native Alaskans living in four villages surrounding the range will be permitted to hunt wood bison for food. This subsistence hunting will provide a valuable source of protein for local communities and help to manage the bison population.

Challenges and Adaptations

Reintroducing wood bison to the Alaskan wilderness is not without its challenges. The unpredictable nature of bison behavior requires adaptability and flexibility in management. Bison are known to become restless and anxious during transport, so precautions are being taken to minimize stress and ensure their well-being.

A Hopeful Future

If all goes according to plan, the wood bison will be thriving in their new Alaskan home by the end of the year. They will contribute to the ecosystem’s health, provide sustenance for local communities, and serve as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.

Additional Information

  • Wood bison are North America’s largest land mammal, with bulls weighing up to 2,600 pounds.
  • They are distinguished from plains bison by their darker fur and larger, humped shoulders.
  • Wood bison once roamed in vast herds, but their population declined drastically due to human activities.
  • The reintroduction of wood bison to Alaska is a collaborative effort involving biologists, government agencies, and local communities.
  • The success of the reintroduction program will depend on the bison’s ability to adapt to their new environment and the continued support of stakeholders.
