These estimates place Vasuki indicus as the second-largest known snake, surpassed only by the extinct Titanoboa, which was approximately 43 feet long.

Classification and Habitat

Vasuki indicus belonged to an extinct family of terrestrial snakes called Madtsoiidae. These snakes slithered across various continents, including Madagascar, South America, India, Africa, Australia, and Europe, during the Late Cretaceous and Late Pleistocene epochs. Analysis of the fossilized bones indicates that Vasuki indicus likely had a broad and cylindrical body, similar to modern pythons, and may have inhabited terrestrial or semi-aquatic environments.

Paleoenvironment and Behavior

Based on the size and shape of its bones, researchers believe that Vasuki indicus was a slow-moving snake that traversed the land in straight lines. It is unlikely that it was an active forager and may have instead relied on ambush tactics, wrapping itself around prey to kill it, similar to modern anacondas and large pythons. The warm climate of around 82 degrees Fahrenheit during its time period may have been conducive to its survival.
