In 2014, paleontologists made a groundbreaking discovery: the fossilized remains of a colossal dinosaur that may be the largest to have ever walked the Earth. Excavated from a ranch in Argentina, the dinosaur was named Patagotitan mayorum, meaning “the Mayo family’s Patagonian titan.”
Patagotitan was a herbivore, its massive body supported by enormous limbs and a long, muscular tail. Its neck alone was longer than a school bus, and its overall length is estimated to have exceeded 120 feet. Interestingly, all the known super-giant sauropods, including Patagotitan, Argentinosaurus, and Puertasaurus, seem to have inhabited the same general area in Cretaceous Argentina. This suggests that there may be an upper limit to the size that sauropods could attain, possibly due to environmental factors or physiological constraints.
Factors Contributing to Gigantic Size
The reasons behind the extreme size of these sauropods are still debated. Paleontologist Kristi Curry Rogers suggests that they evolved their massive bodies to take advantage of abundant resources and specialized physiological adaptations that allowed them to thrive as behemoths.
Wedel adds that larger size provided sauropods with several advantages, including increased egg production, protection from predators, and the ability to survive on lower quality food and migrate long distances.
Ongoing Growth and Future Discoveries
Remarkably, even the largest Patagotitan specimens show signs of ongoing growth at the time of death. This suggests that even if Patagotitan is not the largest dinosaur ever discovered, it is likely not the largest representative of its species.
Curry Rogers believes that there may still be larger dinosaurs yet to be discovered. She points out that all the known super-giant sauropods died before reaching full maturity, indicating that even larger specimens may exist.
