They also had an unusually strong connection between the amygdala, which processes emotions, and the inferior frontal gyrus, which processes language. In other areas of the brain, the at-risk group showed less connectivity than the control group.

These brain connectivity patterns are similar to those observed in depressed adults. However, this study suggests that these abnormalities may be a cause of depression, rather than an effect. The researchers plan to follow the at-risk children to see who develops depression, which will help make the screening more accurate.

The researchers are also planning a study to see if preventative treatments might help at-risk children avoid depression in adolescence or young adulthood.
