Great White Shark Expeditions Off Cape Cod

Join Scientists in Studying Ocean’s Apex Predator

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) is offering an exclusive opportunity for the public to join scientists on expeditions to study great white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod. These expeditions provide a unique glimpse into the research and conservation efforts surrounding one of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures.

Behind-the-Scenes Research

Participants on these expeditions will have the chance to witness firsthand how scientists study and track great white sharks in their natural habitat. The research team, led by Dr. Greg Skomal, a senior fisheries biologist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), uses a variety of techniques to monitor and identify these elusive predators.

Guests will observe scientists tagging sharks to gather data on their movements, behavior, and population dynamics. They will also learn about the latest tagging methods and how they help researchers track sharks over long distances.

Understanding Great White Behavior

One of the primary goals of these expeditions is to educate the public about the true nature of great white sharks. Lindsay Graff, a scientist with the AWSC, explains that these predators are often misunderstood and portrayed inaccurately in the media.

“The biggest surprise for people on these trips is how laid back and relaxed the sharks are,” she says. “Most people haven’t been exposed to real perceptions of great white sharks. They’re usually nervous at first, but when we pull up right beside one in the boat, people instantly go from being anxious to amazed.”

Participants will have the opportunity to observe sharks in their natural environment, gaining a deeper understanding of their behavior and ecology. They will learn about the importance of great white sharks in the marine ecosystem and the challenges they face due to overfishing and habitat loss.

Conservation and Research Efforts

The AWSC is dedicated to protecting and conserving great white sharks through research and education. The data collected on these expeditions contributes to a long-term study aimed at understanding the population dynamics and migratory patterns of great white sharks in the Cape Cod region.

Participants will learn about the challenges facing great white shark conservation and the importance of supporting research efforts. They will also have the opportunity to contribute to the conservation of these magnificent creatures by spreading awareness and advocating for their protection.

Unforgettable Shark Encounters

These expeditions offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter great white sharks up close and personal. Participants will witness the beauty and power of these apex predators while gaining a deeper appreciation for their role in the ocean ecosystem.

“Until you see these animals in the wild for the first time, you don’t have a real understanding of them,” says Graff. “But as soon as you do see one in the water, you instantly fall in love with them and will want to work towards conservation and research efforts in the future.”

Book Your Expedition

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s expeditions are held each summer and fall, taking place twice daily on Mondays and Thursdays. Expeditions can accommodate up to five guests and can be arranged through the Chatham Bars Inn.

Join scientists on an unforgettable shark expedition and discover the true nature of these misunderstood predators. Support great white shark conservation and gain a lifetime of memories while immersing yourself in the wonders of the ocean.
