Among octopus mothers, one species stands out for its unparalleled devotion: the pale deep-sea octopus, Graneledone boreopacifica. This remarkable creature spends a staggering 53 months—nearly four and a half years!—standing watch over her eggs, according to a report by KQED Science.

A Dedicated Guardian

Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute discovered the steadfast “octo-mom” during surveys conducted about one mile below the ocean’s surface in Monterey Canyon. Their remotely operated vehicle first spotted the small octopus in 2007, shortly after she had laid approximately 160 eggs.

Over the next four years, the researchers made 18 visits to the octopus’s nesting site. On each visit, they observed the octopus guarding her eggs, which gradually grew larger. Remarkably, they never witnessed her eating during this entire period.

A Successful Hatching

On the final visit, the octopus was gone, and only empty shell casings remained. A subsequent visit revealed several young octopuses crawling near the nest site, suggesting that the mother’s unwavering care had paid off.

The extended brooding period of Graneledone boreopacifica highlights the importance of parental care in ensuring the survival of offspring. By providing constant protection and oxygenation, the mother octopus increases the chances of her eggs hatching successfully and developing into healthy young octopuses.
