Kiruna: A Town on the Move
Relocation Amidst Mining Expansion
Kiruna, a small town in northern Sweden, faces an unprecedented challenge: the expansion of the world’s largest underground iron ore mine beneath its very foundations. This expansion threatens to swallow entire buildings and displace thousands of residents. In response, the town has embarked on a remarkable journey to relocate itself two miles away, brick by brick.
A Symbiotic Existence
For over a century, Kiruna has been inextricably linked to the LKAB iron ore mine, which has provided the town with economic stability and employment. However, the mine’s continued expansion poses a serious threat to Kiruna’s safety and future. In 2004, LKAB announced plans to dig the mine at a 60-degree slope directly under the town, putting nearly 3,000 homes and public buildings at risk.
A Difficult Decision
Faced with the choice of abandoning the mine or relocating the town, the citizens of Kiruna chose the latter. This decision was not taken lightly, as it meant leaving behind their homes, history, and a deep connection to the land. However, the threat posed by the mine was too great to ignore.
Planning a New Kiruna
In 2011, White Arkitekter, in collaboration with Ghilardi + Hellsten, won an international competition to design the new Kiruna. The project involved more than just blueprints and concept art; it also sought to instill hope in the citizens while celebrating the past. A social anthropologist was employed to understand the mindset of the community and ensure a sensitive approach to this delicate task.
A Vision for the Future
The plans for the new Kiruna include a new city hall, a modern city center, ample public spaces, and contemporary housing. Additionally, 21 buildings of significant cultural importance will be moved brick-by-brick to the new town, including the century-old church and the Sheriff’s House.

While the move is being done well ahead of any potential collapse, there is a possibility that the town may have to move again in the future.
