A Tour of the Facility

Upon entering the facility, Levy encountered heavy gates and remote-control barriers reminiscent of the Korean DMZ. Inside, he witnessed the business offices adorned with Nascar memorabilia, a testament to Google’s playful and creative culture.

The control room, with its LCD dashboards, monitored every conceivable metric. Beyond that, he ascended catwalks to inspect the towering cooling towers and backup electric generators, resembling Beatle-esque submarines painted green.

The Heart of the Data Center: The Server Floor

Levy’s tour culminated in the server floor, a vast expanse where the roar of massive fans filled the air. Rows upon rows of server racks stretched to infinity, each containing countless servers that collectively form Google’s computing power.

Key to the floor’s operation are the “hot aisles” and “cold aisles.” The cold aisles maintain an ambient temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit, while the hot aisles, isolated by sheet metal, absorb the heat generated by the servers. Huge fans, akin to jet engines, dissipate the heat, ensuring optimal operating conditions.

The Importance of Clusters

Levy learned that server numbers are less relevant today than they once were. A single Google server now possesses the computational power of 20 servers from a previous generation. Instead of individual servers, Google operates in clusters, vast networks of machines working in unison to provide services and run applications.

As Levy emerged from the tour, he realized that Google’s relentless innovation would soon render the Lenoir data center obsolete. The company’s engineers constantly strive to improve and upgrade their infrastructure, leaving older facilities behind.
