Asteroid-Sampling Spacecraft Captures Haunting View of Earth in Space

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, on a mission to study the asteroid Bennu, captured a breathtaking image of Earth and its lunar companion set against the vast expanse of space.

OSIRIS-REx Mission

OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) is an asteroid sampling spacecraft launched in September 2016. Its primary mission is to collect a sample from the asteroid Bennu and return it to Earth by 2023. This mission aims to provide valuable insights into the formation of our solar system and the potential for asteroid mining in the future.

Earth and Moon from 3 Million Miles Away

As OSIRIS-REx prepared for its encounter with Bennu, it utilized its MapCam camera to capture images of Earth and the Moon from a distance of 3,180,000 miles. The resulting composite image, taken on October 2, 2017, reveals a captivating view of our home planet and its celestial neighbor.

Calibrating Spacecraft Instruments

The primary purpose of these images was to test and calibrate the spacecraft’s instruments. By capturing data on Earth, scientists could ensure the accuracy and precision of the instruments before the spacecraft’s arrival at Bennu.

A Delicate Outpost in Space

Despite its pragmatic purpose, the image of Earth and the Moon from afar serves as a poignant reminder of our shared existence on this fragile planet. It highlights the vastness of space and the interconnectedness of all life on Earth.

Exploring Bennu and Beyond

OSIRIS-REx is scheduled to arrive at Bennu in December 2018. Once there, it will spend two years mapping the asteroid and collecting a sample. The spacecraft’s mission is not only about studying Bennu but also about developing the technologies and skills necessary for future asteroid mining ventures.

A Gateway to Space Mining

Asteroids are believed to contain valuable resources, such as metals and minerals. By studying Bennu and developing asteroid mining techniques, NASA aims to pave the way for future space exploration and the potential utilization of extraterrestrial resources.

A Journey of Discovery

OSIRIS-REx’s mission is a testament to human curiosity and our desire to explore and understand the universe. The spacecraft’s journey to Bennu and its subsequent return to Earth with a sample will provide invaluable knowledge about our solar system and the potential for future space endeavors.
