Giants of the Neolithic: Uncovering the Tall Skeletons of Jiaojia
In the heart of China’s Shandong province, archaeologists have stumbled upon a remarkable discovery that has challenged our understanding of human height in the Neolithic period. During excavations at a late Neolithic settlement in Jiaojia, they unearthed a graveyard containing the remains of several men who towered over their contemporaries.
Exceptional Height in the Neolithic
The skeletons, dating back approximately 5,000 years, measured an astonishing 5’9″ or taller. This would have made them veritable giants in an era when the average height of Neolithic populations in Europe was a mere 5’5″. The discovery has sent shockwaves through the archaeological community, forcing a reevaluation of our assumptions about human stature in ancient times.

The people of Shandong province have long held height in high regard. However, even among this population known for its tall stature, the men of Jiaojia graveyard would have stood out as exceptional. Legend has it that Confucius, a native of the region, reached a legendary height of 9’6″.
Theories on Towering Heights
Researchers have proposed several theories to account for the extraordinary height of these Neolithic men. One possibility is that they were high-status individuals who enjoyed a privileged lifestyle with access to better nutrition than the general population.
