The Indoor Plant Jungle

Brian Hood’s home in Columbus, Ohio, is a veritable indoor jungle, boasting over 200 lush and beautiful plants. From towering giants to delicate ferns, Hood’s plant collection is a sight to behold.

Big Plants

As you step into Hood’s living room, you’re greeted by an array of towering plants that he keeps there due to their sheer size. Among them is the Philodendron Thaumatophyllum, with its massive leaves that Hood affectionately refuses to share cuttings of. Another standout is his Opuntia Cactus, which he serendipitously found as a tiny plant on the side of the road. “She’s huge and a little bit evil, but it’s okay because she’s awesome!” Hood says with a laugh.

Plant-Filled Bedroom

Venturing into Hood’s bedroom, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a conservatory or a tropical rainforest. Plants abound, leaving little room for walking space. “People are always wondering how I fit all my plants in here,” Hood says. “I honestly think they walk into my room and place themselves.”

Monsteras

One of Hood’s most prized possessions is his Monstera Deliciosa, a stunning plant that he jokes requires a machete to fully appreciate. He also has a Monstera Albo Variegata, a highly sought-after plant with variegated leaves that can fetch a hefty price tag.

The Plant That Most Resembles Him

When asked which plant he feels most akin to, Hood points to his Ficus Elastica Tineke. “During the summer, she gets some gorgeous pink leaves and she’s just so colorful,” he says. “And during the winter, she’s a little pale. And also, same.”

Moody Plants

Hood’s collection also includes a variety of “moody plants,” such as Calatheas, Marantas, and Stromanthe. These plants are known for their dramatic foliage and their ability to indicate when they’re unhappy. “They will tell you if they’re unhappy,” Hood says.

Plant Care Philosophy

Hood believes in a tough love approach to plant care. “I always let them know that there’s a compost pile in the backyard,” he says. “I think tough love definitely works on them.”

The Ducks

In addition to his vast plant collection, Hood also shares his home with a few pet ducks. These feathered friends add a touch of whimsy to his indoor jungle, and they’re always on the lookout for a tasty plant snack.

A Plant-Filled Life

Hood’s passion for plants is evident in every corner of his home. He loves the beauty and tranquility that they bring to his life, and he believes that everyone can benefit from having plants in their homes. “Plants make me happy,” he says. “They’re like my children.”

Hood’s indoor jungle is a testament to the power of plants to transform a space and enrich our lives. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just starting to explore the world of indoor gardening, Hood’s story is sure to inspire you to bring more greenery into your own home.
