How to Repair Broken Blinds: A Comprehensive Guide

Horizontal Blinds

Bent or Broken Slats

To repair a bent or broken slat on horizontal blinds, you can either use a replacement slat or a slat from the bottom of the blinds. If the issue is a broken pull cord, purchase a replacement before proceeding.

  1. Unthread the Blinds: Remove the pull cord from the slats below the damaged one. Pull up on the center lift cord to unthread it, then repeat with the remaining lift cords.

  2. Replace the Damaged Slat: Pull the damaged slat out of the ladder rungs and slide the replacement slat into place, ensuring the pull cord holes align.

  3. Restring the Blinds: Thread the pull cord down through the route holes in each slat. Slide the cords through the bottom rail and tie a knot at the end of each cord to secure it. Snap the plastic plugs back into place and test the blinds.

Broken Pull Cords

  1. Remove the Plugs: Pop up the plugs from the bottom rail using a flathead screwdriver, then pull them out with pliers.

  2. Unknot the Lift Cords: Pull the knotted ends of the lift cords out of the unplugged holes using tweezers or pliers. Untie the knot or cut the cord above the knot and melt the frayed end to prevent unraveling.

  3. Replace the Damaged Lift Cord: If replacing a damaged cord, remove the blinds from the mounting brackets. Cut the cord at the fray and pull it out through the bottom rail. Splice the new cord to the cut end of the old cord and rehang the blinds. Guide the new cord through the headbox and attach plastic tips to the end.

Vertical Blinds

Rotation Issues

Inspect the blinds for tangles or twists and untangle them if necessary. Remove any physical objects or dirt that may be jamming the blinds. Apply lubricant spray to improve rotation.

Broken Carrier Stems

  1. Remove the Blind: To access the carrier stem, remove the blind.

  2. Replace the Stem: Grip the carrier body with pliers and twist the stem away, then detach it downward. Insert a replacement stem and push it into the carrier body until it slides into place. Reattach the blind.

Ripped, Torn, or Broken Blinds

  1. Disconnect the Damaged Blind: Detach the clip securing the spacer chain and feed it out of the loop at the bottom of the blind. Remove the blind from the hooks at the top and detach it by lifting it up and bending it slightly.

  2. Install a New Blind: Lower the new blind onto the empty hook at the top. Thread the spacer chain through the holes on the disconnected blinds and reattach the clip. Test the blinds to ensure they work properly.

Cordless Blinds

Not Moving Up or Down

  1. Check the Batteries: Replace low batteries.

  2. Readjust the Tension: Spin one end of the blind in the bracket to increase tension.

  3. Reset the Blinds: Push up on the blinds and slowly release to reset the tension. For horizontal blinds, pull down and gently sway from side to side before lifting back up.

  4. Manually Unroll: Pull the blind down and out at a 45-degree angle and unroll it manually to reset the tension.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If blinds are not rotating properly, check for obstructions, dirt, or a damaged carrier stem.
  • If a pull cord is knotted and you can’t untie it, cut the cord and melt the frayed end to prevent unraveling.
  • If cordless blinds are not working, check the batteries, readjust the tension, or reset the blinds by pushing up and releasing.
  • If manual unrolling of cordless blinds does not work, contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
