How to Install a Drop Ceiling Yourself in 10 Steps

Installing a drop ceiling is a great way to add a new look to your room while also covering up any unsightly wires or pipes. It’s a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.

Step 1: Planning

Before you start installing your drop ceiling, you need to plan out the layout. This includes determining the size of the ceiling, the location of the grid, and the type of tiles you want to use.

Materials:

  • Ceiling grid kit
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Chalk line
  • Utility knife

Instructions:

  1. Measure the length and width of the room to determine the size of the ceiling.
  2. Mark the center point of each wall.
  3. Run a chalk line perpendicular to the joists of the ceiling above, starting from the center point of each wall.
  4. Determine the height of the ceiling by measuring the height of the lowest protrusion on the ceiling and adding 2-1/2 inches.
  5. Mark this height on the wall and use a rotary laser level to create a level line around the entire room perimeter.

Step 2: Installing the Grid

Once you have planned out the layout, you can start installing the grid. The grid is made up of main support beams and cross tees.

Instructions:

  1. Attach the wall moldings to the wall at the height of the laser line, using a stud finder to locate the studs.
  2. Drive a nail at each wall’s center point and run a chalk snap line across to the opposite end of the room.
  3. Snap a line across the bottom of all of the joists, 2 feet apart from each other.
  4. Attach the joist brackets to the joists at the marked locations.
  5. Insert hanger wires through the openings of the joist brackets and hook them onto the main support beams.
  6. Level the main support beam and attach it to the hanger wires.
  7. Continue hanging and leveling the rest of the support beams.
  8. Snap cross tees between parallel rows of support beams, starting at the center and working outward.

Step 3: Installing the Tiles

Once the grid is installed, you can start installing the ceiling tiles.

Instructions:

  1. Place the ceiling tiles in the grid, starting near the center.
  2. Lift a ceiling tile above the grid and insert it diagonally through one of the grid openings.
  3. Continue outward, installing full tiles.
  4. When you reach a border, measure the border opening and cut a ceiling tile to size with a utility knife.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once all of the tiles are installed, you can add any finishing touches, such as crown molding or lighting.
