The Eclectic Icon Returns
Bill Murray, the beloved actor and comedian, has left an indelible mark on New York City, from starring in iconic films to bartending in Brooklyn. On June 12, Murray will make a special return to the city for a unique event: a poetry reading while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Poets Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge
As part of the 22nd Annual Poetry Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge, Murray will join renowned poets Billy Collins, Sharon Olds, Gregory Pardlo, and Claudia Rankine for a literary pilgrimage across the historic bridge. Participants will recite poems inspired by the vibrant energy and iconic landmarks of New York City.
Murray’s Enduring Support for Poetry
Murray’s involvement with Poets House, the organization hosting the event, dates back to the 1990s. He provided seed funding for the Poets House Library and has been a steadfast supporter ever since. “Bill fell in love with the event and has proven himself to be a great advocate for Poets House,” said Lee Briccetti, executive director of Poets House.
A Literary Journey with a Purpose
The 1.1-mile bridge crossing is expected to take approximately 45 minutes, offering ample time to immerse oneself in the literary experience. Participants are encouraged to read Hart Crane’s “To Brooklyn Bridge” beforehand to enhance the journey.
Accessible Options for All
Tickets for the event range from $250 for general admission to $10,000 for a premier ticket that includes a dinner and reception at Poets House following the walk. However, Poets House emphasizes that the public is welcome to walk alongside the official participants, even without a ticket. Donations are encouraged to support the organization’s literary programs and events.
Literary Enrichment for Children
Proceeds from the event will directly benefit Poets House programs, including over 100 literary initiatives for children each year. These programs foster a love of literature and creativity in young minds.
