Colors Designers Are Eager to Leave Behind in 2024
As we approach the new year, it’s time to reflect on the color trends we’re ready to bid farewell to. Interior designers have shared their insights on the hues they’re eager to say goodbye to in 2024, along with suggestions for alternative color choices that will refresh our living spaces.
Gray: Time to Move Beyond the Simple Shade
Many designers have expressed a desire to move beyond the classic color gray. Jennifer Hunter, founder of Jennifer Hunter Design, believes it’s time to embrace colors that bring more vibrancy and personality into our homes. She encourages clients to be open to bold patterns and colors, predicting an increase in those willing to make a statement in 2024.
Amy Vroom, founder of The Residency Bureau, agrees, stating that plain gray no longer brings her joy. She recommends opting for a gray-blue hue instead, which offers a timeless yet updated twist. Laura Umansky, founder of Laura U Design Collective, also advises against cool grays, suggesting warmer tones and bold colors as the dominant trends.
Champagne Beige: A Neutral That’s Lost Its Appeal
Beige, once a popular neutral, has also fallen out of favor with designers. Beth Diana Smith, founder of Beth Diana Smith Interior Design, finds champagne beige to be uninviting and flat. She encourages homeowners to explore other neutral shades that can create a more uplifting and welcoming atmosphere.
Pink: From Accent to Overexposure
Pink has made a splash in interior design in recent years, but designers are now ready for a break from its overexposure. Rande Leaman, founder of Rande Leaman Interior Design, has had enough of Barbie pink, while Umansky agrees that we’ve seen an excessive amount of it in the past few months. Smith adds that lighter pink hues, such as peach, are also on their way out, as they tend to cast an unflattering tint on surrounding colors.
Brown: A Sad Hue for Interiors
Leaman also expresses a desire to say goodbye to brown, finding it to be a depressing color for interior spaces. However, she makes an exception for animal prints featuring brown, which add a touch of sophistication and style.
Navy Blue: A Classic Overstaying Its Welcome
Hunter believes it’s time to make way for colors beyond navy blue. While acknowledging its classic status, she suggests that it has been overused and is ready for a break. She recommends opting for lighter or darker shades of blue to help accentuate furnishings and decor.
