2023 Decor Trends Designers Wish They’d Skipped

When it comes to interior design, staying on top of the latest trends can be a challenge. While some trends, like bold colors and maximalist style, have gained popularity, others have fallen out of favor. Here are a few decor trends that designers wish they could skip:

Delicate Kitchen Hardware

While delicate kitchen hardware may look visually appealing, it’s not always practical. As designer Ashley Macuga of Collected Interiors points out, “Knobs on drawers make cabinetry look like a vintage dresser, but practically speaking, pulls are the way to go in the kitchen.”

Bare Windows

Bare windows are popular due to their minimalist aesthetic, but they can have several drawbacks. As Kelly Simpson of Budget Blinds explains, “The absence of window treatments can sometimes make a space feel cold and sterile.” Additionally, bare windows can compromise privacy, subject wood floors and furniture to UV light, and sacrifice energy efficiency.

Cold Design

Jenni Lauri of Lauri Design Studio believes it’s time to move away from cold, sterile design. “Warm and classic textures add depth to a space,” she says. “My passion lies in the artful fusion of aged metals, natural organic finishes, stained woods, and plaster paint, creating a symphony of textures.”

Accent Walls

Designer Raquel Skrobarczyk of Heather Scott Home & Design is not a fan of accent walls. “If you love a pattern or color enough, it should be on all the walls (maybe even the ceiling too!). Really embracing color and pattern in certain rooms makes such an impact.”

White and Grays

Jillian Ezra, founder of Lagom Home, has said goodbye to overly white interiors. “I’m not ready for warm wood with orange undertones,” she says. “I’m loving bold pops of color, especially jewel tones in moderation.”

Monochromatic Rooms

In line with her thoughts on overly white interiors, Ezra also isn’t a fan of monochromatic rooms. “Ditch the single color palette and overly matchy decor for complementary hues and plenty of texture.”

Mass-Produced Art

For Ezra, mass-produced art is another trend to skip. “Get yourself on Etsy, find an amazing digital print, print it yourself, and buy a huge IKEA frame,” she suggests.

Additional Tips from Designers:

  • When it comes to kitchen hardware, choose pulls over knobs for practicality.
  • Consider adding window treatments to bare windows for privacy, UV protection, and energy efficiency.
  • Create warmth and depth in your space by incorporating warm textures such as aged metals and natural organic finishes.
  • Embrace bold colors and patterns throughout a room rather than limiting them to accent walls.
  • Opt for local or vintage art or find unique pieces online instead of relying on mass-produced art.
