How to Make a Groovy Disco Ball Planter: A Step-by-Step Guide

Overview

Transform your living space into a shimmering oasis with a captivating disco ball planter. This DIY project is a breeze to create, adding a touch of sparkle and groove to your indoor décor. With an estimated working time of 40 minutes to an hour and a total time of 1 to 2 hours, this intermediate-level project is accessible to most DIY enthusiasts. The materials required are readily available and cost-effective, ranging from $25 to $40.

Materials

Equipment / Tools:

  • Utility knife
  • Metal straw
  • Pencil (optional)

Materials:

  • Work gloves
  • Disco ball (solid foam)
  • River rock (optional)
  • Plant soil
  • Macramé hanger
  • Ceiling hanger (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Protect Your Hands

It’s essential to wear work gloves before handling the disco ball, as you’ll be working with small glass pieces. This safety measure will prevent any cuts or injuries.

Step 2: Extracting Mirror Pieces

Place the disco ball on a flat surface and carefully cut 1/3 of the way down using a utility knife. This cut will allow you to remove a row of mirrors. Remove all the mirror pieces in that row.

Step 3: Cut a Line Across the Disco Ball

Sketch a line across the empty row on the disco ball using a pencil, or freehand the cut if you’re comfortable. Cut along the line and pull off the top portion, discarding the remains.

Step 4: Add Drainage Holes

Using the metal straw, poke several drainage holes on the bottom of the disco ball through the styrofoam. This step is crucial for ensuring proper drainage and preventing root rot in your plant.

Step 5: Extra Drainage (Optional)

For additional drainage, add a layer of river rock to the bottom of the planter. Spread it evenly throughout the bottom.

Step 6: Add Soil

Fill the planter with your preferred or suitable plant soil. Ensure there is enough soil to accommodate the size of the plant you choose.

Step 7: Pot Plant

Carefully pot your plant into the disco ball planter. Whether you’re repotting an existing plant or potting a new one, ensure it fits snugly and adjust the leaves as needed.

Step 8: Place It in a Macramé Hanger or on Your Desk

Display your new disco ball planter in a macramé hanger for a suspended ceiling display, or place it directly on a table or desk. Its shimmering appearance is guaranteed to draw attention wherever you choose to place it.

If hanging your planter, ensure the hook you install is durable enough to support its weight.

Tips

  • Good drainage is essential for plant health. Avoid overwatering and ensure your planter has adequate drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Choose a plant that thrives in bright, indirect light, such as a spider plant or peace lily.
  • If you don’t have a macramé hanger, you can use a sturdy string or rope to hang your planter.
  • Get creative with your disco ball planter. You can add decorative elements such as beads, tassels, or paint to personalize it.
