Art Meets Science: Curator Plants Forest in Stadium to Raise Climate Change Awareness
The Unending Attraction of Nature
In a bold artistic statement on climate change, curator Klaus Littmann is transforming Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt, Austria, into a native central European forest. Inspired by Max Peintner’s drawing “The Unending Attraction of Nature,” the installation, titled “For Forest,” will feature 299 transplanted trees.
Dystopian Vision, Environmental Message
Peintner’s drawing depicts a stark contrast between a tree-filled stadium and an industrial skyline, evoking a dystopian future where nature thrives only in designated spaces. Littmann’s installation brings this vision to life, highlighting our tendency to take nature for granted.
Transplanting Trees for a Temporary Forest
Landscape architect Enzo Enea is tasked with planting a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, each measuring up to 45 feet tall and weighing up to six tons. The trees will be transported from Italy, Northern Germany, and Belgium, as Austria lacks suitable trees for the project.
Environmental Concerns and Mitigation
The project has faced criticism regarding the environmental impact of transporting trees, but Littmann cites engineering research to ensure the stadium can support the temporary forest. Additionally, Austria’s lack of suitable trees necessitated the long-distance transportation.
Public Access and Changing Perspectives
“For Forest” will be open to the public from September 9 to October 27, 2019, with up to 30,000 spectators able to view the makeshift forest at a time. The installation will be lit naturally during the day and by floodlights at night, creating ever-changing perspectives for visitors.
Shifting Emotions and Understanding
“Encountering [‘For Forest’] will trigger a multiplicity of responses and emotions,” explains a press release. “This captivating panorama will pave the way for a whole new perspective and understanding of forests.” The installation aims to spark conversations about the importance of nature and the need to protect our environment.
Temporary Installation with Lasting Impact
After the installation closes, the forest will be relocated to a nearby public space, where it will remain accessible as a “living forest sculpture.” Wörthersee Stadium will be restored to its pre-forest state, continuing to host sporting and cultural events.
