Curved Coins: A Historic Innovation from the US Mint
Commemorating Baseball’s Legacy
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Congress commissioned a special set of commemorative coins in 2012. These coins, available in denominations of $5, $1, and half-dollar, are unique in their curved shape, marking the first time the US Mint has produced such coins.
Unprecedented Coin Production
The process of creating these curved coins was highly technical, requiring extensive research and development. The Mint utilized CNC milling to create test dies, expediting the prototyping process. Initially intended to be domed only for the gold and silver coins, the project expanded to include the clad half-dollar coins as well. This presented additional challenges due to the risk of warping and die defects, but the team successfully overcame these obstacles.
The Baseball Glove Design
The reverse side of the coin, depicting a baseball glove, was designed by artist Cassie McFarland, a baseball enthusiast from San Francisco. This design captures the essence of the sport, paying homage to the iconic symbol of the game.
International Collaboration
While the curved coin design was a first for the United States, other countries, including Australia and France, had previously produced similar coins. The US Mint consulted with these countries during the development process to leverage their expertise.
A Flatter Commemoration
In addition to the curved coins, the US Mint also issued a commemorative coin for the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This coin, available in a fancier version for $54.95, maintains a flat shape while honoring a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement.

The curved coins are notable for their unique production process, which involved:
- CNC milling of test dies to expedite prototyping
- Domed design for both gold and silver coins, as well as the clad half-dollar coin
- Introduction of additional metals into the clad coin, increasing the risk of warping and die defects
- Tweaking of the dome shape and relief severity to ensure successful production
