The Lovatelli Venus showcases the synergy between form and color. The heavy, richly colored rim of her mantle emphasizes the anticipation of her impending disrobing, adding a layer of narrative to the sculpture.

Susanne Ebbinghaus, a Harvard art historian, points to a passage in Euripides’ Helen, where the remorseful Helen laments her role in sparking the Trojan War. This passage highlights the dual nature of color in Greek art. On the one hand, it could be easily removed, symbolizing the superficial and transient nature of beauty. On the other hand, color was also seen as the essence of an image, embodying its beauty and power.
